"What dharmas": Question: The names of the dharmas refer to the triyāna dharmas; the Buddha only realizes the ekayāna, so how can it be said that the dharma of realization has the triyāna? Answer: The Buddha internally illuminates and penetrates the triyāna, hence it is called realizing the triyāna. Furthermore, he causes sentient beings to realize from these three vehicles, hence it is called the dharma of realization. "How dharmas": investigating what all dharmas arise from. What do these triyāna dharmas arise from? Because they arise from the manifold teachings of the triyāna. "How dharmas: namely, expounding through giving rise to various manifold matters": expounding the triyāna dharmas through either principles or analogies, according to the time and according to the person. "What like dharmas": investigating analogies and categories of dharmas. The Mahāyānasaṃgraha has two explanations: first, taking the principle of dharmas as the likeness, because the principle resembles the gate; second, taking the attainment of the fruit as the like dharma, because the fruit resembles the cause. Furthermore, the fruit is similar to the text and principle; now it is appropriate to use the fruit as the like dharma. The preceding two lines spoke of the triyāna dharmas; now one attains the triyāna fruit; therefore the text states, "attaining purification in reliance on the three gates." "What characteristic dharmas": investigating the external characteristics of dharmas. The three lines above clarified the triyāna dharmas; these two lines below clarify the ekayāna dharma. Expounding the triyāna teachings causes them to return to the ekayāna; the ekayāna is precisely the one characteristic. "What essence dharmas": investigating the internal essence of dharmas; one should appropriately take the one Buddha vehicle as the essence. "Without two or three": pratyekabuddha is the second, and śrāvaka is the third.
