"Defiled is called inferior; undefiled is called superior": the gate of inferior and superior. Explained in terms of substance: wholesome and unobscured [matter] is called superior matter; unwholesome and obscured [matter] is called inferior matter. If interpreting inferior and superior according to the intention of the *Saṅgītiparyāya-śāstra*, it is either viewed in terms of unwholesome matter, obscured matter, unobscured matter, sāsrava wholesome matter, and anāsrava wholesome matter, compared in this order, the former being inferior and the latter superior. Or viewed in terms of the three kinds of matter—of the desire realm, of the form realm, and unattached—compared in this order, the former is inferior and the latter superior. It is fully as explained there.
