Regarding [the text from] “Other masters say …” to “… solely establishes the name dharma,” this recounts the explanation of different masters. Form obtains the general name because, first, its substance is largely coarse and manifest, and second, it is the sphere of the three eyes; therefore it is established with the general name. The other āyatanas are not like this. Although the ten form āyatanas are all spheres of the wisdom eye, the eye and the other nine āyatanas are not spheres of the fleshly or divine eyes, and furthermore they are not coarse and manifest, so [the general name] is not established [for them]. As for the dharma eye and the Buddha eye: the wisdom eye is named dharma [eye]; these four eyes when arriving at the Buddha’s body are collectively named the Buddha eye. Because within the dharma-āyatana there are names that can express all dharmas, and there is wisdom that can cognize all dharmas, it therefore obtains the name dharma. The other āyatanas are not like this. Saying “names” reveals words and sentences; or it is because names and the substance of wisdom are predominant.
