Regarding "The commentary says: [...] are subsumed under two skandhas": On the measure of the dharmaskandhas, three explanations differ. The first master explains: it means the Buddha preached eighty thousand separate Dharmaskandha-sūtras, each and every one being like that in the *Ṣaḍdharmaskandha-abhidharma*. The *Dharmaskandhapāda-śāstra* has six thousand stanzas; this determines the quantity according to the text. The second master determines the quantity according to the signified meaning, stating that one doctrinal heading constitutes one dharmaskandha. That is, in accordance with the expressed words such as the skandhas, their individual distinctions number eighty thousand, and the expressing dharmaskandhas are also equal in number. In accordance with each preached teaching, one doctrinal heading is called a dharmaskandha—namely, the five skandhas, twelve āyatanas, eighteen dhātus, twelve links of dependent origination, four noble truths, four nutriments, four dhyānas, four immeasurables, four formless attainments, eight liberations, eight bases of overcoming (abhibhv-āyatana), ten totality-bases (kṛtsnāyatana), thirty-seven factors of awakening, six supernormal knowledges, non-contentiousness (araṇā), knowledge through aspiration (praṇidhi-jñāna), four unhindered understandings (pratisaṃvid)—"and so forth" encompasses the remaining doctrinal headings. The third and orthodox explanation determines the quantity according to function: each dharmaskandha is named according to each affliction it eliminates. That is, because sentient beings' courses of conduct (carita) characterized by greed, anger, and so forth have eighty thousand differences, in order to remedy those courses of conduct, the World-Honoured One preached eighty thousand dharmaskandhas such as the contemplation of impurity. These eighty thousand dharmaskandhas are all subsumed under the two skandhas of rūpa and saṃskāra among the five skandhas, as in the two preceding explanations. There is an interpretation that this belongs only to the third explanation; this is not so. Stated in terms of a round number, it is merely called eighty thousand; if spoken of in full, there are eighty-four thousand. Master Paramārtha explains: "The ten anuśayas make ten; each has nine anuśayas as its preliminary expedient; each complete set of ten thus forms one hundred. The one hundred each have a prior part and a posterior part, which together with the fundamental ones make three hundred. Setting aside the fundamental one hundred, within the two hundred prior and posterior ones, each takes nine anuśayas as preliminary expedients, which together with the fundamental two hundred combine to make two thousand. Adding the fundamental one hundred makes two thousand one hundred. Furthermore, considered in terms of the five types—those dominated by greed, dominated by hatred, discursive thinking, delusion, and attachment to self—each type has two thousand one hundred, making ten thousand five hundred. Those already arisen are ten thousand five hundred, and those not yet arisen are ten thousand five hundred, combining to make twenty-one thousand. Furthermore, dividing them equally among four types of persons according to the three poisons, each has twenty-one thousand, combining to make eighty-four thousand."
