言釋題目者，阿毘達磨，形二藏以立名。俱舍，標一部之別稱。阿毘言對，能所對故。達磨名法，持生解故。俱舍名藏，攝依彼故。論謂言論，教誡學徒。此卷在初，故稱第一。

As for explaining the title: "Abhidharma" sets its name in contrast with the other two pitakas. "Kośa" designates the specific title of this particular work. "Abhi" means "facing" (counter-facing), because of the confronting [faculty] and the confronted [object]. "Dharma" means teaching, because it preserves [its own nature] and generates understanding. "Kośa" means repository, because it encompasses and serves as the locus for that. "Śāstra" means treatise, instructing and admonishing students. This fascicle is at the beginning, hence it is called the first.
