[On the phrase,] "The Abhidharma masters [...] because of committing a natural offense": From here down, the Abhidharma masters resolve the preceding four proofs. This resolves the first proof: the exclusion of drinking liquor among natural offenses. They say that drinking various liquors is not a natural offense, but for the sick, [the Buddha] only excluded natural offenses while generally permitting prescriptive precepts. This actually permits drinking, which clarifies that it is not a natural offense. If it were a natural offense, the Buddha would not have permitted it. As for prohibiting drinking liquor at another time, the Śākyan who contracted illness had an innate inability to drink, and in order to prevent committing a natural offense because of this, the Buddha prohibited drinking.
