[On the phrase,] "Furthermore, all noble ones [...] because the amount is not fixed": This resolves the third proof: not committing it across lifetimes. Because all noble ones possess shame and modesty, and moreover themselves fear losing mindfulness, all noble ones do not drink liquor, not drinking even a little. Because, like poison, the amount is variable, it is not because it is a natural offense that the noble ones do not drink it. Thus Mahāvibhāṣā 123 states: "Other masters say: A noble one across lifetimes definitely does not drink liquor. Even in infancy, when a wet-nurse forces drops into their mouth with her finger, because they are not self-determined, there is no fault. As soon as they have discernment, even if they encounter forceful conditions, in order to protect life and limb they ultimately will not drink; therefore, among prescriptive offenses, the liquor precept is established alone."
