[On the phrase,] "Furthermore, as for the sūtra stating that [...] are all natural offenses": This resolves the fourth proof: being a bodily misdeed. When the sūtra states that drinking liquor is a bodily misdeed, it is because liquor is the basis for all heedless misdeeds; since bodily misdeeds are initiated on account of drinking liquor, drinking liquor is said to be a bodily misdeed, not that it is called a bodily misdeed by virtue of being a natural offense. For this reason, the designation 'basis of heedlessness' is applied specifically to drinking liquor. The other four, killing living beings and so forth, are not given the designation 'basis of heedlessness', because they are all natural offenses. Thus Nyāyānusāra 38 states: "Or, drinking various liquors is called a misdeed because it is a basis of heedlessness, not because it is a natural offense; hence this alone is designated a basis of heedlessness, unlike killing living beings and so forth, because those are natural offenses." Another explanation: The sūtra relies on that which is purely with a defiled mind to designate a bodily misdeed. Drinking liquor allows for an absence of defilement; hence it is clearly known not to be a misdeed.
