"If a person who has committed a grave offense ... bestow [the status of] a bhikṣu undergoing training": The Sarvāstivāda objects. If a person who has committed a grave offense is not a bhikṣu on account of having no precepts, then there would be no bestowing upon a bhikṣu who has committed a grave offense the training in the precepts for the rest of his life. Yet it is said in the Vinaya: although the bhikṣu Chandaka had committed a grave offense, because he had no intention to conceal it, the World-Honoured One dispatched him to train in the precepts for the rest of his life. Since he was dispatched to train in the precepts, we clearly know that committing a grave offense does not abandon the precepts.
