"[The stanza says:] Up to: are both projecting and completing": This is the answer. The two mindless absorptions, being virtuous, although they possess ripening (vipāka), have no power to project the generic group (nikāya-sabhāga), because they are not a coexistent cause (sahabhū-hetu) with the various karmas. Acquisition (prāpti) also has no power to project the generic group, because it does not share the same fruit with the various karmas. All remaining unvirtuous and virtuous sāsrava dharmas, because they serve as coexistent causes with the various karmas and possess efficacy, all extend to both projecting and completing. Furthermore, Vibhāṣā 19 also states that the generic group is a projected fruit, and the rest are completing fruits. Moreover, the sense of the Nyāyānusāra is: intention (cetanā) brings about both projected and completing [fruits], while the remainder bring about only completing [fruits]. Question: Since the two absorptions and acquisition do not bring about a projected [fruit], what completing fruit do they bring about? Answer: As Vibhāṣā 19 says: "Critique: It should be stated thus: The ripening of non-conception (āsaṃjñika-vipāka) is solely the fruit of the absorption of non-conception. The ripening of that life-faculty (jīvitendriya), generic group, and five material faculties is solely the fruit of minded karma of the fourth dhyāna. The ripening of its remaining skandhas is a shared fruit. Question: What ripening fruit does the absorption of cessation experience? Answer: It experiences the four-skandha ripening fruit of the station of neither-conception-nor-non-conception, excluding the life-faculty and generic group, because those are solely the fruits of karma. Question: What ripening fruit do the acquisitions experience? Answer: The acquisitions experience the ripening fruits of form, mind, mental factors, and formations non-associated with mind. 'Form' refers to form, smell, taste, and tangibility—not the five material faculties, because those are karma-fruits. 'Mind and mental factors' refers to painful feeling, pleasant feeling, neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, and the dharmas associated with them. 'Formations non-associated with mind' refers to acquisitions, arising, aging, staying, and impermanence." It also says: "Question: For those who create karma, do they first create the karma that projects the generic group, or do they first create the karma that completes the generic group? The authoritative statement is: This is indefinite. Some first create projecting karma and later create completing karma; some first create completing karma and later create projecting karma, arising in accordance with the intention of the creator of karma."
