17.28

「有餘師說至見所斷惑」者，此下釋漸斷。一敘異說、二申正義，此即異說。九品善根由一剎那邪見頓斷，如見道斷見所斷惑，一無間道九品頓斷。問：邪見有九品，何品能斷？解云：至第九品上上邪見方頓斷。又解：文既不別說，隨起何品邪見皆能頓斷。

Regarding "Other masters say ... defilements abandoned through vision": Below this explains gradual severing. First, a different view is relayed; second, the correct doctrine is presented. This is the different view. The nine grades of wholesome roots are severed immediately by wrong view in a single instant, just as defilements abandoned through vision are abandoned in the path of vision—the nine grades are severed immediately by a single uninterrupted path. Question: Wrong view has nine grades; which grade can sever them? An explanation says: Only when reaching the highest-of-the-highest grade of wrong view, the ninth grade, are they severed immediately. Another explanation says: Since the text does not specify, whichever grade of wrong view arises, it can sever them immediately.
