Regarding "The correct doctrine says ... is called severing the wholesome roots": This is the correct doctrine: the wholesome roots are severed gradually. The nine grades of wholesome roots to be severed, moving from coarse to subtle, are called the "reverse"; the nine grades of wrong view capable of severing, moving from subtle to coarse, are called the "direct." Corresponding in reverse and direct, they are severed sequentially, just as the defilements abandoned through cultivation are abandoned in the path of cultivation—the nine grades are severed gradually. If one gives this explanation, it accords with the root treatise. Since that treatise says, "The subtle concurrent wholesome is abandoned last," we clearly know that the wholesome roots are severed gradually in nine grades.
