As for "The noble path and nirvāṇa ... one's feet do not stay upon": This explains the second heading. The noble truth of the path and the truth of cessation, nirvāṇa, are contrary to the afflictions that take them as objects. Dharmas of the upper stages are contrary to the afflictions of a lower stage that take them as objects. Therefore, the nine [afflictions] taking the uncontaminated as object and the two taking upper realms as object likewise have no possibility of increasing through adherence to an object. Just as on a scorching stone, one's feet do not stay upon it. The scorching stone is the metaphor for the object; the feet not staying upon it is the metaphor for the afflictions taking it as object.
