As for "Some say that anuśaya ... is not what increases through adherence": This relates an alternative view. This explains "increase through adherence" in the sense of accord (anuvartana). Some say: "Anuśaya" has the meaning of according with. Uncontaminated objects do not accord with the anuśayas, nor do objects of the upper stages accord with lower anuśayas; therefore, although they are objects, there is no possibility of increasing through adherence. Like a patient with a wind illness who takes dry, astringent medicine: the patient does not accord with the medicine, so there is no increase through adherence [to the illness]; the medicine has no power over the patient, so it is not what can increase through adherence. The patient is the metaphor for the object; the medicine is the metaphor for the afflictions taking it as object. Here, the patient with a wind illness is specifically taken as the metaphor, not the wind illness itself. If one considers the wind illness with respect to the dry, astringent medicine, because they accord with each other, there is increase through adherence.
