As for "Former masters ... are unwholesome in nature": This relates an alternative view. Former masters of the Sautrāntika spoke thus: Innate view of self is indeterminate in nature, like the active presence of the view of self in birds, beasts, and the like; because it is born together with the body it is called 'innate', and it is abandoned by the path of cultivation. If it arises from conceptual discrimination, relying on teachings, then it is unwholesome, and is abandoned by the path of seeing. Positing two views of self agrees with the teachings of Mahāyāna sūtras. If according to the Sarvāstivāda, the view of self is exclusively conceptually discriminated and exclusively abandoned by seeing; there is no innate [view of self]. The reckonings of birds, beasts, and the like should all be known to be merely abandoned by the path of cultivation, subsumed under non-defiled, indeterminate erroneous knowledge.
