Regarding "Therefore, if one accepts... and one's own group": this is the answer of the proponent of ten entanglements. Jealousy and stinginess have particularly severe faults: that is, because these two repeatedly manifest. Moreover, jealousy is the cause of low status, and stinginess is the cause of poverty. Moreover, because they comprehensively display the sad and joyful secondary defilements: among the secondary defilements there are two general classes, first, sorrow, and second, joy; jealousy displays sorrow, and stinginess displays joy. Moreover, because they afflict the monastic and householder groups. Thus the Nyāyānusāra states: "Furthermore, these two can afflict two groups: that is, the householder assembly, in matters of wealth and status, is severely afflicted by jealousy and stinginess; the monastic assembly, in matters of doctrine and practice, is severely afflicted by jealousy and stinginess. Or, because they afflict the devas and the asuras. Among the devas there is a fondness for fine flavors, and among the asuras there is a fondness for beautiful women: the devas are stingy with flavors and jealous of women; the asuras are stingy with women and jealous of flavors; because of this they wage war." Asura is translated here as 'non-god'. Thus the Nyāyānusāra states: "Or they can afflict the hosts of devas and asuras: that is, on account of women and flavors they are severely perturbed." Or because they afflict the two superior destinies of humans and devas. Thus the Nyāyānusāra states: "Or these can afflict the two destinies of humans and devas, as the World-Honoured One said to Kauśika: 'By the fetters of jealousy and stinginess, humans and devas are afflicted.'" Or jealousy afflicts other groups, and stinginess afflicts one's own group. Thus the Nyāyānusāra states: "Or these two can afflict one's own assembly and other assemblies: that is, by jealousy one afflicts other factions, and by harboring stinginess internally one afflicts one's own companions." Because of the above seven especially grave faults, within the ten entanglements these two are separately established as fetters.
