On the phrase “All, as appropriate… therefore they are not stated separately”: This is the reply. The desire realm has dejection and pain; therefore its defilements operate in a sorrowful mode. The upper realms have no dejection or pain, and are moistened by concentration; therefore their defilements do not operate in a sorrowful mode. Whatever defilements belong to the consciousness of whatever plane, each universally associates with all feelings of its own consciousness. If in the first dhyāna where there are all four consciousnesses, the defilements arising in each one of those consciousnesses each universally associate with all the feelings of their own consciousness: if in the three [sensory] consciousnesses, they associate with pleasure and equanimity; if on the mental plane, they associate with joy and equanimity. From the second dhyāna upward, there is only mental consciousness. The defilements arising in the mental consciousness of the second dhyāna universally associate with the joy and equanimity of mental consciousness. The defilements arising in the mental consciousness of the third dhyāna universally associate with the pleasure and equanimity of mental consciousness. The defilements arising in the mental consciousness of the fourth dhyāna and above universally associate with the neutral feeling of mental consciousness. The numbers of consciousnesses and feelings in the various upper planes have already been explained above, and are therefore not stated separately. Furthermore, the Samayapradīpikā (fascicle 27) states: “For what reason are the two kinds of doubt both indeterminate, yet in the upper [realms doubt] can associate with joy and pleasure, while doubt in the desire realm cannot arise together with the feeling of joy? Because all defilements in planes detached from desire, though indeterminate, are not sorrowful; although harboring the net of doubt, they do not lack emotional comfort. Just as in the human realm when one seeks and obtains what one loves, although there is much fatigue, an experience of pleasure is produced. Some say: In the form realm, although one harbors doubt, within doubt one conceives the notion of a wholesome factor; hence it can associate with joy and pleasure.”
