[On the passage] "having reached the seventh existence [...] go forth to renounce the world in another path": this clarifies the physical appearance [of the practitioner] when the seven rebirths are complete and there is no Buddha-Dharma [present in the world]. The former master's intention states: encountering a time without the Buddha-Dharma, having attained arhatship, one must certainly not remain at home; by the nature of things, one naturally acquires the physical appearance of a bhikṣu—shaving the hair and donning the dyed robes. It does not speak of "obtaining the precepts," because among the ten manners of obtaining the precepts, obtaining the precepts at the time of attaining arhatship is not mentioned. The latter master's intention states: he goes to various other non-Buddhist paths to renounce the world, adopting the physical appearance of an outsider. Between these two explanations, the former is correct. Therefore, the Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 64, states: "Only relying upon a Buddha's appearance in the world is there the prātimokṣa restraint. Thus, if in his seventh existence he does not encounter the Buddha-Dharma, he attains the fruit of an arhat right while remaining at home. Having attained the fruit, he certainly will not dwell at home, and the deportment of a bhikṣu is naturally accomplished. Although he does not meet with what was taught by a previous Buddha, he generates an extreme revulsion toward remaining life, and without passing a long time, he enters complete cessation. Some say he goes to another path to renounce the world; in principle, this should not be so, for going to another path operates through the power of bad views and wrong actions." Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 46, states: "Question: If the seven existences are complete and no Buddha appears in the world, does he attain the fruit of an arhat while living at home? Some say: He does not; he must renounce the world and put on the other religious robes to attain arhatship. Some say: Having attained arhatship at home, he will certainly afterward renounce the world and put on the other religious robes. As for what is properly stated: he naturally accomplishes the appearance of a disciple of the Buddha, up to attaining the ultimate fruit. Just as the five hundred sages in Mount Iṣīkā cultivated the path—they were originally śrāvakas who appeared in an era without a Buddha, and monkeys manifested to them the appearance of a disciple of the Buddha, whereupon they all learned it and realized the fruit of a pratyekabuddha—because one who is beyond training (aśaikṣa) does not adopt the appearance of an outsider."
