23.189

論「至第七有至苾芻形相」，釋不逢佛得羅漢果。由無學道力，形自出家故，法爾自得苾芻形相。《婆沙》四十六云「如是說者，彼法爾成佛弟子相乃得極果。如五百仙人在伊師迦山中修道，本是聲聞，出無佛世。獼猴為現佛弟子相，彼皆學之，證獨覺果。無學不受外道相故。」

The treatise says, "Upon reaching the seventh existence... the appearance of a bhikṣu." This explains how one attains the fruit of an arhat without meeting a buddha. Due to the power of the path of the non-trainee, one's outward form naturally leaves household life; thus, by the nature of things, one spontaneously acquires the appearance of a bhikṣu. The *Vibhāṣā*, fascicle 46, states: "The correct explanation is: by the nature of things, it is only upon assuming the appearance of a disciple of the Buddha that they attain the ultimate fruit. Just as five hundred ṛṣis were cultivating the path in Mount Iṣīkā, being originally śrāvakas who appeared in an age without a buddha: monkeys manifested the appearance of Buddha's disciples for them, and they all imitated them and realized the fruit of a pratyekabuddha. For a non-trainee does not take on the appearance of an outsider."
