Regarding "Cognition is liberation... like expelling a thief and shutting the door": The eight cognitions are paths of liberation. When they are in the state of arising, they are not concomitant with the possession of defilement and are called "being liberated"; when they are brought into the present, they are called "having been liberated from the possession of defilement," and because they arise simultaneously with the possession of disjunction, they are called paths of liberation. Thus the Mahāvibhāṣā says: "All paths of liberation are called only 'realizing cessation', because they manifest simultaneously with the possession of disjunction. The unobstructed path is like expelling a thief; the path of liberation is like shutting the door."
