[On the text,] "How can an ārya abiding in his primordial state be called a trainee (śaikṣa)?": This is an inquiry. If an ārya abides in his primordial state, how is he called a trainee? To "abide in the primordial state" means either not falling back or not progressing in practice. Therefore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 176, states: "That a trainee abides in the primordial state has two causes and conditions, on account of which it is called abiding in the primordial state: first, keeping to his virtuous nature without falling back; second, keeping to his own stage without progressing in practice." This is explained extensively therein.
