27.12

「四根上下智力」者，知信根等上下差別，名根上下智力。故《顯宗》云「若如實知諸有情類能逮勝德根品差別無罣礙智，名根上下智力。雖有中根而待勝劣，是劣勝攝，故不別顯。此中根名為目何法？謂目信等，斷善根者總相續中亦有去來信等善法。或目意等。

Regarding 'Fourth, the power of knowledge of the degrees of the faculties,' knowing the differences between the higher and lower degrees of the faculty of faith and so forth is called the power of knowledge of the degrees of the faculties (indriya-parāpara-jñāna-bala). Thus the Xianzong says: 'The unimpeded knowledge that knows as it truly is the distinctions among the grades of faculties of sentient beings capable of attaining superior virtues is called the power of knowledge of the degrees of the faculties. Although there are intermediate faculties, relative to the superior and inferior, they are subsumed under the inferior and superior, and are therefore not separately shown. What dharmas does the name "faculty" denote here? It denotes faith and so forth; even in the general continuum of one whose roots of goodness are cut, there are still past and future wholesome dharmas of faith and so forth. Or it denotes the mind faculty (manas) and so forth.'
