On the passage beginning with "Furthermore, in all formless [levels]" up to "is thereby excluded": The second explanation. Furthermore, in all formless levels, insight (vipaśyanā) is diminished and calm abiding (śamatha) is increased; the five supernormal knowledges necessarily rely on levels where calm abiding and insight are balanced. The threshold stages (anāgamya) and the intermediate [dhyāna] are thereby excluded, because in them insight is increased and calm abiding is diminished. Furthermore, the Nyāyānusāra states: "If so, for what reason is there the supernormal knowledge of the exhaustion of contaminations? Because all levels—pleasant, painful, sluggish, or swift—are capable of exhausting contaminations. The five [other knowledges] are particularly cultivated sublime qualities, which can only be generated in sublime levels."
