"The Great Master, the eye of the world, has long been closed; / Most of those worthy of witnessing have dispersed and perished": below this is the second part, lamenting and encouraging study. Within it, first it laments the persons, and second it encourages the study of the Dharma. Within lamenting the persons, first it directly laments the persons, and second it re-explains the lamentation. Within directly lamenting the persons, first it laments the virtuous, and second it laments the arising of faults. Here it first laments the virtuous. The upper line laments the Tathāgata, and the lower line laments the disciples. The Great Master of the three realms was the eye of the world; having entered quiescence for a long time, it is said that he "has long been closed." The noble disciples, Śāriputra and the rest, who were worthy of witnessing and realizing the Buddha's true Dharma, have also entered nirvāṇa, and most have dispersed and perished.
