"Thus have been explained ... having no regard [for wholesome qualities]": This explains the fourth pair. Pride (māna) means evaluating the classes of virtues in relation to others, where the mind exalts itself, relies on itself, and looks down upon others. Here it should also mention evaluating lineage and so forth, but it is omitted for brevity. Arrogance (mada) means being first tainted by and attached to one's own qualities, such as lineage, physical form, and so on, causing the mind to become conceited and reckless, having no regard for wholesome dharmas. Therefore, the *Mahāvibhāṣā*, fascicle 43, says: "Here, arrogance (mada) means not comparing oneself with others, but merely being tainted by and attached to one's own lineage, form, strength, wealth, status, knowledge, and so forth, in the mode of a conceited mind. Pride (māna) here means comparing oneself with the lineage, form, strength, wealth, status, knowledge, and so forth of others, in the mode of exalting and relying on oneself." Question: Does pride always compare oneself with others or not? Answer: The statement about comparing oneself with others is spoken from the perspective of the majority. Therefore, the *Mahāvibhāṣā* says: "Critique: It should be stated thus: Not all pride necessarily arises in comparison to others, because of the force of habitual practice from beginningless time. Based on one's own continuum, pride also becomes active. (The explanation says: Pride, excessive pride, pride surpassing pride, and humility-pride—these four compare oneself to others. The pride of 'I', pretension, and wrongful pride arise based on one's own continuum.)"
