"Therefore the sūtra says… because they enter parinirvāṇa by themselves" cites scripture as proof. Among the four alternatives, the first three alternatives show shifting in accordance with the continuum, while the fourth alternative shows enduring once arisen. This explains the first alternative. The gods corrupted by play (krīḍā-pradūṣikā devāḥ) are those who are attached to play and amusement, whose bodies and minds are fatigued and whose memory is lost, dying there through the predominance of joy. The gods corrupted by mind (manaḥ-pradūṣikā devāḥ) are those whose minds generate intense indignation, looking at each other askance with hateful thoughts, dying there after brooding for a long time without cessation. These two are either the Four Great Kings' gods or the Thirty-three Gods. Therefore the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle one hundred and ninety-nine, asks concerning these two classes of gods: "Question: Where do such gods dwell? Some say they dwell on the terraces of Mount Sumeru; some say they are the Thirty-three Gods." In this first alternative, one should also mention the Buddhas who curtail their lifespan and enter parinirvāṇa by themselves. This is merely a summary indication, not an exhaustive enumeration. Therefore the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle one hundred and fifty-one, further states regarding the first alternative: "Furthermore, there is a class—whether nāgas, suparṇas, or spirits and humans, or yet others—that can be harmed by themselves but not by others."
