Regarding the passage from "If it is a trainee mind" up to "separating from passion for desire and form": this clarifies that a trainee mind acquires four, acquired through two positions: first, acquired through entering concentration; second, acquired through separation from passion. Through first entering the realization of the certainty of rightness, with the patience with suffering manifesting, one acquires the trainee mind. This is through entering concentration; and through the noble path separating from passion for the desire realm, at the ninth path of liberation one acquires the fundamental concentration and acquires the two fruition-of-mastery minds of the desire and form realms. If one separates from passion for the form realm by the noble path, one acquires the wholesome mind of the formless realm. Question: At what time does one acquire that formless-realm wholesome mind? The explanation is: if one separates from passion for the fourth dhyāna by the noble path, at the time of the ninth path of liberation one acquires the formless-realm wholesome mind. Although the threshold of the realm of empty space possesses sāsrava dharmas of the same counteractive class, its bondage to the stage is firm, and without having abandoned lower defilements, one cannot cultivate the higher. If interpreted in this way, completely separating from form-realm passion is called "separating from form passion." Alternatively: if by the noble path one separates from passion for the fourth dhyāna, at the time of the initial uninterrupted path one immediately acquires the wholesome mind of the threshold to formless empty space, because a threshold wholesome mind is necessarily cultivated in the same counteractive class. If interpreted in this way, partially separating from form-realm passion is called "separating from form passion." The *Xianzong* also has both explanations, which will be fully cited and explained below when clarifying cultivation. The reason one does not acquire a form-realm wholesome mind is that when about to acquire the trainee mind, one has necessarily already accomplished it. Nor does one acquire the non-trainee [mind], because when the trainee [mind] is manifest, one definitely does not accomplish the non-trainee.
