On the passage in the treatise from "If it were not so" to "should be known and should be severed": Explanation by objection. If, relying on the sūtra text, only the six classes of intention were the volition skandha, then among conditioned phenomena, the remaining conditioned phenomena besides form, feeling, conception, and consciousness would not be subsumed under the grasping skandhas, and therefore would not be the truths of suffering and origin. Since they would not be suffering and origin, they could not be what should be known and what should be severed.
