[On the quote from the] *Śāstra*: “Faculties are also threefold, namely sharp, medium, and dull,” for the sharp he taught skandhas, because skandhas are concise; for the medium he taught āyatanas, because āyatanas are neither extensive nor concise; for the dull he taught dhātus, because the gateway of dhātus is extensive. The faculties and natures of sentient beings are threefold: First, differences in speed of understanding, dividing into three distinct faculties. Second, ease or difficulty in memory, dividing into three distinct faculties. If dividing higher and lower faculties based on differences in understanding, then concise teachings are for the sharp, and extensive teachings are for the dull. If dividing higher and lower faculties based on differences in memory, then concise teachings are for the dull, and extensive teachings are for the sharp.
