[On the quote from the] *Śāstra*: “Aspirations are also of three kinds… the three: skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus,” this can be understood from the text. These three kinds of threefold sets are briefly stated by the author of the *Śāstra*; following their particular meanings, they are immeasurable. Thus the *Nyāyānusāra* says: “What the author of the sūtra has stated here is still minimal. That is to say, disciples have differences in three stages: those who have surpassed mental application, those who have thoroughly cultivated practice, and those who are beginning their endeavours. There are three distinct faults: harbouring the practice of conceit, clinging to what belongs to the self, and being deluded about consciousness’s basis and object. There are differences in three illnesses: generating arrogance relying on life, wealth, or clan. Due to conditions such as these, in their proper order, the World-Honoured One taught for them the three: skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus.”
