[On the Śāstra's statement:] '[In the] third and fourth dhyānas [up to] namely, the investigation of mental phenomena', this sets forth the third and fourth dhyānas. In these dhyānas, the mind of this stage has solely the feeling of equanimity; it can take the desire realm as a referent, hence there are only six. If taking the form realm as referents, there are only four, namely excluding odors and tastes. For the formless realm there is only one: the investigation of mental phenomena of equanimity.
