On the Śāstra's words, "Twenty-four fingers [...] the measure of intermediate paths": Explaining the latter four measures. In ancient times, one bow was eight chi, which is the ancient xun. Nowadays there are those of six chi and below, which is the six-chi bu method. Nowadays the five-chi bu method is mostly used. "Krośa" is a place not reached by the sound of humans or oxen, a place free of noisy clamour; in Sanskrit it is called araṇya. "A" means non-, and "raṇya" means noisy clamour. If calculated using eight chi as a xun, the measure of five hundred bows is four thousand chi. If calculated using six chi, it is three thousand chi. If one calculates a bow by one cubit (hasta) being one chi and six cun, then it is six chi and four cun. Because the treatise was composed in ancient times, one should calculate it by eight chi.
