The treatise says: "These three disaster-knives … nothing remains." This relates that in the receptacle [world] that is destroyed, even the atoms are exhausted. The Vibhāṣā, scroll 133, states: "When the fire disaster arises, some say that the seven suns were previously concealed by Yugandhara; initially one sun rises, and when the world is destroyed, the remaining six suns gradually emerge, thus destroying the world. Some say that one sun divides into seven suns. Some say that one sun acquires sevenfold strength. Some say that the seven suns were previously hidden beneath the earth and gradually appear afterward. The correct explanation is: the predominant power of the karma of sentient beings causes the world to form; when the end of the kalpa is reached, because the power of karma is exhausted, disaster-fire arises in nearby places wherever [appropriate], such that even the Brahmā palaces are incinerated. When the water disaster arises, some say that rain of hot ash-water from the border of the Third Dhyāna can destroy the world. Some say it wells up from the water mandala below. The correct explanation is: the predominant power of the karma of all sentient beings causes the world to form; when the end of the kalpa is reached, because the power of karma is exhausted, disaster-water arises in nearby places wherever [appropriate], and by that cause and condition the world is destroyed. When the wind disaster arises, some say that wind arises from the border of the Fourth Dhyāna and can destroy the world. Some say that fierce wind arises from the wind mandala below. The correct explanation is: the predominant power of the karma of all sentient beings causes the world to form; when the end of the kalpa is reached, because the power of karma is exhausted, disaster-wind arises in nearby places wherever [appropriate], such that all is scattered and destroyed up through the Śubhakṛtsna Heaven." What this treatise says about the three disasters mostly does not follow the definitive doctrine of the Vibhāṣā; the Master of the Treatise had a different view.
