"The treatise says down to: produced by primary elements": this explains the defiled (sāsrava) reliance on its own plane. Because defiled form is bound to its own plane, it is produced by the primary elements of its own plane. Also, because its own plane possesses primary elements, it is not produced by the primary elements of another plane. Question: When a body residing in a lower plane gives rise to higher meditative absorption (dhyāna), it uses the higher plane's primary elements within the lower plane's body to produce [the form]. Since the higher plane has much form, where are those four primary elements located? Answer: The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 134, says: "Question: When one is born in the desire realm and the primary elements of the form realm manifest before one, where do they manifest? Some say between the eyebrows, some say at the tip of the nose, some say beside the heart, some say beside the navel, some say at the toes. Some say: they manifest at whatever place the mind was settled in prior preparation (prayoga). Other masters say: the primary elements of the desire realm are gross, while the primary elements of the form realm are subtle; the subtle enter the spaces of the gross like oil entering sand. However, when the fundamental absorption (maula-dhyāna) manifests before one, the primary elements of the form realm arise throughout the entire body; if the access absorption (sāmantaka-dhyāna) manifests before one, the primary elements of the form realm arise only beside the heart. Some say: when the access absorption manifests before one, the primary elements of the form realm also arise throughout the entire body, but they do not nourish the body as the fundamental does. Just as there are two people who go together to a pool to bathe, one scooping water at the side of the pool to wash the body, and one entering the pool to soak the body and wash; although both people apply water to the whole body, the one who entered the pool excels in nourishing the body. The latter explanation is superior, because depending on whether the absorption is superior or inferior, both pervade the body."
