13.38

論「有執覺聲前因後滅」，此是勝論異師執。前覺聲滅由後念生，以後與前性相違故，猶如後水逼前水流。彼師不立四相計故，但由後生令前念滅。

Treatise: "Some hold that for consciousness and sound, the preceding perishes due to the subsequent cause." This is the assertion of a divergent Vaiśeṣika master: the cessation of a preceding consciousness or sound is due to the arising of a subsequent moment, because the subsequent and the preceding are contrary in nature, just as subsequent water presses against preceding water in a stream. Because that master does not maintain the four characteristics, he holds that solely the subsequent arising causes the preceding moment to perish.
