13.40

論「有執燈焰滅以住無為因」，此是上坐師計。住謂住相，住相若在，法無容滅，以住無故方能滅法。故彼焰滅，以住無為因。

Treatise: "Some hold that the flame of a lamp perishes with the absence of duration as its cause." This is the assertion of the Sthavira masters. 'Duration' refers to the characteristic of duration. If the characteristic of duration is present, there is no way for a dharma to perish; it is only because duration is absent that a dharma can perish. Therefore, they hold that the cessation of a flame has the absence of duration as its cause.
