On the Śāstra's: "Here, two phenomena ... can definitely remember shape": The author of the Śāstra refutes the rescue. Seeing fire and knowing warmth, or smelling a flower and knowing color, are invariably non-separate. Only when one has previously known their connection does seeing or smelling make it known; if not previously known, seeing or smelling does not make known the warmth of fire or the color of the flower. Touch and shape are not like this: whether one knows their connection or does not know it previously, if the body follows touch, it immediately knows long and the like. Yet because long and smooth are not invariably connected, how could one remember shape in the dark? Therefore one knows that if there were a distinct shape, it would have to be touched by the body.
