On the Śāstra's: "The Vaibhāṣikas... there would be the fault of obtaining and losing", this recounts the Vibhāṣā's explanation. The Vibhāṣā explains by reductio ad absurdum: if one only obtained discipline with respect to objects one is capable of killing, then a sheep here would be an object one is capable of killing, while a deity of a higher realm would not be an object one is capable of killing. In this life, when a deity becomes a sheep, one should obtain the precept on that spot; when a sheep becomes a deity, one should lose the precept. Since these are not conditions for obtaining or losing [precepts], how could there be obtaining and losing? The explanation of the second master in Vibhāṣā 117 is largely identical to this treatise.
