On the treatise's: "Why are the other defilements […] not the essence of inversions?" it sets aside and establishes the essence of the four inversions. Among the defilements, three causes are provisionally established, and taking the predominant among them forms the essence of the inversions. Possessing those three causes and being predominant among them: among all defilements, only two and a half views possess these three causes. That is, being unconditionally inverted, having the nature of deliberation, being a false superimposition, and having a predominant essence. "Unconditionally inverted" excludes attachment to precepts and vows, because it has an object of awareness with a slight amount of purity. The Nyāyānusāra says: "Attachment to precepts and vows is not unconditionally inverted, because what is posited may possibly cause separation from the defilement of sensual desire and so forth, attaining purity at a slight distinct time." The explanation says: The ascetic practices posited by non-Buddhists can cause separation from defilement and so forth, attaining a minor purity at a distinct time; and within the Buddhist teaching, positing mere observance of precepts as the path also attains purity at a slight distinct time—it is not that positing wrong views or doubts regarding the truth of the path as the path is called attaining purity at a slight distinct time, because their correct comprehension is not the cause of purity. Second, "having the nature of deliberation" excludes the other defilements that are not views. "False superimposition" excludes the view of annihilation and wrong view. What is called "predominant" excludes attachment to views abandoned by the other three truths. The Nyāyānusāra says: "Attachment to views in the other categories is not predominant."
