The Śāstra says: "Because those who are already free from desire and those who have severed the roots of wholesomeness still possess it." This proves that it is of non-defiled neutral nature. Because those who are already free from desire still possess it, this proves it is not defiled. Because those who have severed the roots of wholesomeness still possess it, this proves it is not wholesome. If it were defiled, the nature of an ordinary worldling of the desire realm would have to be a defiled phenomenon of the desire realm, and when separating from the defilement of desire, one would not possess it. Since one still possesses it when separated from the defilement of desire, we know it is not a defiled phenomenon. The *Nyāyānusāra* says: "Its nature as an ordinary worldling is subsumed under non-defiled neutral nature. If this were defiled, an ordinary worldling of the desire realm, having separated from desire-attachment, should no longer be an ordinary worldling. The possession of this acquisition belongs to the body of rebirth; therefore, one born in another realm or stage should not possess the ordinary worldling natures of other realms or stages. If this were wholesome, one who has severed the roots of wholesomeness should no longer be an ordinary worldling; therefore it is subsumed under non-defiled neutral nature. Since it is non-defiled, it is not abandoned by vision. If it were abandoned by vision, it should be abandoned by forbearance (kṣānti). If it were abandoned by forbearance, while forbearance is actively arising one should still possess it, and then a noble one would also be an ordinary worldling. Furthermore, non-defiled phenomena are definitely not abandoned by vision, because they are only called abandoned when the afflictions that take them as cognitive objects are completely abandoned."
