On the Śāstra's 'Furthermore, a sūtra states [...] consciousness with grasping is spoken of': Explaining the five seeds. There are two explanations. The first explanation states: first, roots; second, stems; third, branches; fourth, joints; fifth, seeds. These are similes for consciousness with grasping. The second explanation states: the 'five seeds' means that the seeds of the five destinies are called consciousness with grasping; 'grasping' is affliction, and consciousness accompanied by affliction is the cause of the five destinies, hence called consciousness with grasping. Since the sūtra does not state this metaphorically, the latter explanation is correct. This proves that the sūtra does not speak of craving alone.
