On the Śāstra's 'Having explained the truths, it should be stated how': Below is the third major section of this chapter, distinguishing persons according to their stage. In the text there are three parts: first, explaining the preliminary practices of the noble path; second, distinguishing persons according to the three paths; third, explaining the distinctions among the paths. Within explaining the preliminary practices of the noble path: first, generally indicating the gate of preliminary practice; second, explaining the purification of body and vessel; third, explaining in detail the seven preliminary practices. This next single verse generally indicates preliminary practice. The Nyāyānusāra states: 'The behavioral practices trained in the ground of initial practice by those seeking to see the noble truths are extremely extensive; those who wish to understand them comprehensively should seek them in the treatises on contemplation compiled by the noble ones. In short, a beginner should have a deep aspiration for liberation, contemplate the virtues of nirvāṇa, turn away from the faults of saṃsāra, and first apply effort to approach good friends, because good friends are the basis of all practices. One who possesses the power of learning and so forth receives the name "good friend", like a skilled physician,' and so on, up to extensive exposition.
