On the Śāstra's statement, "However, when the World-Honoured One said... he made such a statement": This cites a sūtra as proof. The Buddha's statement that everything is suffering was made based on the two approaches of suffering through conditioned forces and the suffering of change. Painful sensation has two aspects, namely the suffering of suffering and suffering through conditioned forces. Pleasant sensation has two meanings, conditioned forces and change; neutral sensation has only the meaning of conditioned forces. If based on the approach of suffering through conditioned forces, one observes all three sensations as suffering; based on the approach of the suffering of change, pleasant sensation is also suffering. Observing the intrinsic characteristic of sensations, painful sensation is suffering, while the other two are not suffering. The Buddha himself explained: "Relying on all conditioned forces being impermanent, and all conditioned phenomena being subject to alteration, I said with hidden intent: 'Whatever sensation there is, none is other than suffering.'" Therefore, one knows that it was said with hidden intent via the approach of suffering through conditioned forces; this sūtra was not spoken based on the suffering of suffering.
