On the Śāstra's statement: "Just like planting a seed ... such is the tradition": an analogy is raised to illustrate it. The *Nyāyānusāra* says: "At the fastest, it takes three lives before one attains liberation. That is, in the first life one plants [the roots of goodness] conducive to liberation; in the second life one brings them to completion; in the third life one produces those conducive to penetration and immediately enters the noble path. If it were held that in the second life one produces those conducive to penetration, and in the third life one enters the noble path and finally attains liberation, that statement would contradict what was previously explained—namely, that for one who produces warmth and the like based on a fundamental stage, they will definitely enter the vision of the truths in this very life. Or else they would have to accept that it takes at the fastest two lifetimes: namely, that one who produces warmth and the like based on a fundamental stage in the second life would definitely enter the noble path and attain liberation in their present life." The master of the *Kośa* rescues [the thesis], saying: One who produces warmth and the like based on a fundamental stage must already have produced warmth and the like in a previous life; or alternatively, only one in a fourth life is able to produce them based on a fundamental [stage].
