The treatise says: "It is not said here... there is no fault of contradicting what was said before." The author of the treatise clarifies the sūtra. When the sūtra states that the spheres of activity and domains of the six faculties are each distinct, each distinctly seeking its own sphere of activity and its own domain, it does not mean the six faculties such as the eye here; it merely speaks of the mental consciousness induced by the dominant power of the eye and the other faculties, calling it the six faculties such as the eye. Why is this? The five faculties such as the eye and the consciousnesses produced from them do not have the power to take delight in seeing and so forth. That which takes delight in seeing and so forth is the mental consciousness following the five consciousnesses. Because an independently functioning mental consciousness cannot seek the domains traversed by the five faculties such as the eye, it is therefore said that the spheres of activity and domains of the six faculties are distinct. There is no fault of contradicting what was said before, namely that the five faculties each grasp their own domain.
