The treatise says: "A good mind of the form realm... due to advancing." This explains the form-realm good mind. When this good mind advances, upon attaining the unarrived contemplation one acquires the form-realm good mind, and upon attaining the root contemplation one acquires the two minds of magical transformation; hence it says three are acquired. Question: After which mind does one fall away? Answer: The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 61, says: "Immediately following which mind do afflictions arise directly? If one has completely abandoned the defilements of the stage of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, and falls away because an entangling affliction of that stage manifests, then immediately following a good mind of that stage, afflictions arise directly. If one has not completely abandoned the defilements of the stage of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, and falls away because an entangling affliction of that stage manifests, then immediately following either a good mind or a defiled mind of that stage, afflictions arise directly—and so on down to the first dhyāna, it should be known to be the same. If one has completely abandoned the defilements of the desire realm, and falls away because an entangling affliction of the desire realm manifests, then immediately following either a good mind or a non-defiled indeterminate mind of the desire realm, afflictions arise directly. If one has not completely abandoned the defilements of the desire realm, and falls away because an entangling affliction of the desire realm manifests, then immediately following either a good mind, a defiled mind, or a non-defiled indeterminate mind of the desire realm, afflictions arise directly. Here, if one has not yet attained the root good dhyāna or formless absorption directly, one cannot fall away because an entangling affliction of the form or formless realm manifests; one can only fall away because an entangling affliction of the desire realm manifests. If one has attained the root good dhyāna directly, but not the formless absorption, one cannot fall away because an entangling affliction of the formless realm manifests, but can fall away because an entangling affliction of the desire or form realm manifests. If one has attained the root good dhyāna and the formless absorption directly, one can fall away because an entangling affliction of the three realms manifests." Where the Vibhāṣā says that when falling away in the desire realm, an indeterminate mind immediately generates a defiled mind, one explanation says three indeterminate minds, and another says two indeterminate minds; there is no critical evaluation [by the compiler].
