The treatise says: "If it is the mind of a trainee... abandoning the defilements of desire and form." This explains that a trainee's mind acquires four minds. When first entering the path of vision, one acquires the trainee's mind. When abandoning the defilements of desire via the uncontaminated path, one acquires the two minds of magical transformation. When abandoning the defilements of form, one acquires formless good. When abandoning the defilements of both realms, this covers their entirety. The Nyāyānusāra states: "Here, the word 'abandoning' does not mean ultimate abandonment, because when the defilements of form are not yet entirely abandoned, the good mind of the formless realm can already be acquired. Some say: When one entirely abandons the defilements of the form realm, one acquires the root-stage good of the formless realm. If so, it should be said that one also acquires the trainee's mind, and when abandoning the defilements of desire one also acquires form-realm good; in that case, one should say the trainee's mind acquires five." When one severs upper defilements based on lower uncontaminated [mind], regarding cultivating contaminated unarrived contemplation, there are only two different explanations. They will be distinguished below.
