Regarding the passage from "A defiled mind of the formless realm" up to "therefore it is called acquiring two": this clarifies that a defiled mind of the formless realm acquires two minds: namely, a formless-realm defiled mind and a trainee mind. It is acquired through only one position: namely, retrogressing by giving rise to defilements. Question: When retrogressing and giving rise to defilements of the three realms, immediately following which mind are those defilements given rise to? The explanation is: as the *Vibhāṣā* (fascicle 61) states: "Immediately following what mind do afflictions manifest? If one who has completely detached from the defilement of the stage of neither-conceptualization-nor-non-conceptualization retrogresses because entanglements of that stage manifest, immediately following a wholesome mind of that stage afflictions manifest. If one who has not completely detached from the defilement of the stage of neither-conceptualization-nor-non-conceptualization retrogresses because entanglements of that stage manifest, immediately following either a wholesome mind or a defiled mind of that stage afflictions manifest; up to the first dhyāna, it should be known that it is also like this. If one who has completely detached from the defilement of the desire realm retrogresses because desire-realm entanglements manifest, immediately following either a wholesome mind or an unobstructed neutral mind of the desire realm afflictions manifest. If one who has not completely detached from the defilement of the desire realm retrogresses because desire-realm entanglements manifest, immediately following either a wholesome mind, a defiled mind, or an unobstructed neutral mind of the desire realm afflictions manifest. Herein, if one has not yet acquired the manifestation of the fundamental wholesome dhyāna and formless absorptions, they cannot retrogress because form-realm or formless-realm entanglements manifest, but can only retrogress because desire-realm entanglements manifest. If one has acquired the manifestation of the fundamental wholesome dhyāna but not the formless absorptions, they cannot retrogress because formless-realm entanglements manifest, but can retrogress because desire-realm or form-realm entanglements manifest. If one has acquired the manifestation of the fundamental wholesome dhyāna and formless absorptions, they can retrogress because entanglements of the three realms manifest." When the *Vibhāṣā* explains that when retrogressing in the desire realm, a neutral mind can immediately produce a defiled mind: one explanation says three neutral minds; one explanation says two neutral minds, excluding the maturation-born. However, there is no evaluative authority.
