Its mode of activity is subtle, continuously binding and continuously increasing—this is the definition of a latent defilement (anuśaya). This chapter explains them extensively, hence it is named the 'Chapter: Exposition of the Latent Defilements'. Although it also clarifies the entanglements (paryavasthāna) and stains (mala), because latent defilements are the root, they are stated first at the beginning of the chapter. As for why latent defilements are explained after karma: karma, due to defilements, is able to summon rebirths across existences. Karma is particular while defilement is universal; therefore, karma was explained first, and latent defilements are explained afterwards.
