The Śāstra says: "If an entity, like the mind... is not logically sound": this refutes the first horn, that it acts like the mind as a generative condition. For instance, when consciousness takes the future as an object, after hundreds of thousands of kalpas that entity will exist, or it may never exist at all. Since it does not yet have an activity, how could it generate present consciousness? Furthermore, the nature of nirvāṇa is contrary to the arising of all contaminated dharmas; how could it serve as a condition to generate the consciousness that cognizes it?
